Disc Golf Discs – Shortest Way To The Disc Golf Basket

There are differences between disc golf discs you should understand if you are planning to make an impact in the sport. Simply grabbing a frisbee disc and throwing it may be fun for awhile but you won't make much impression on your rivals.

A disc golf set is like your golf club set in traditional golf. Clubs for driving, approach shots, chipping and putting. In disc golf, it's no different except the tool you're using to make the shot is different.

Let's narrow the shot selection down to four. In disc golf you would need a:

- Distance driver

- Fairway driver

- Mid-range

- Putt & approach

Let's take a look at each one individually. Each of the discs mentioned above have a role to play and when you use them as a team on each hole you play and really practice using them individually you will take your game to another level and start to tear up disc golf courses.

Disc Golf Discs

#1. Distance drivers are like your driving woods. They are designed to extract maximum distance from your "tee-off" efforts. Just remember to gain the most distance quite often it has nothing to do with the strength of the throw but more to do with technique.

#2. Fairway drivers are often misunderstood by traditional golfers and in a sense, they are also under utilized by disc golfers. Fairway drivers are great tools when you want to get some accuracy going in your game and not only that, they will get you distance as well. If you aren't using your fairway driver disc enough then go and practice with it...it will add a new dimension to your game.

#3. Mid range discs are like your irons. They can cover a variety of distances from long to medium approach shots and are probably the most used disc in your disc bag.

#4. The putt and approach disc is like the final relay runner and it's the one that takes you home. Just like each of the above, the putt and approach is a skill all on it's own and needs to be practiced just as much as the longer hitting discs.

There are two other discs we haven't mentioned but this article is for serious players who are serious about improving their game. Specialty discs are more old school and will often be used in unique situations while recreational dics are just that - for having fun but don't underestimate their effectiveness to sharpen up your skills even when you are in fun mode.

If you want to guarantee disaster, huge expense and seriously

challenge your health in your trade show marketing, follow this

simple formula. Although these top 10 tips are somewhat humorous,

they are unfortunately based on real-life observations I have made in

many trade shows.

1) Think you know everything, even if you've never attended a travel

trade show. You're convinced travel trade show marketing is for you

because everyone else seems to do it. Plus you're not sure what other

tourism marketing to do.

2) Don't do any pre-show promotions to regional customers and

prospects. You don't want to spend any more money because your

cheap or max'd out your credit card. You figure it's the trade show

management's job to get people to the show.

3) Never talk to show management and don't read the manual before

the show. You believe that all they want to do is try to sell you more

space or inform you about an additional union cost they forgot to tell you

about.

4) Design and build the booth yourself in your spare time. Proudly place

your company name across the middle of your display in large 4" type;

"Joe's Fun Trips". Load up the booth and table with dozen's of small

photos your 7-year old niece took with "Brownie camera.

5) Don't talk with your staff or create show goals. Put your old Uncle

Albert in the booth since he knows your region and trips better then

anyone, even though he's hard of hearing and shy. Don't have or

practice a strategy on how to approach prospects.

6) Arrive just in time for the show because you want to avoid extra

lodging costs. Carry and move all your booth supplies and avoid the

expense and hassle of shipping and handling.

7) Consider everyone in the show a prospect. Try to coral everyone

that's walking by. Tell everyone what's better about your trips and why

everyone else's stinks.

Give everyone several of your expensive new 4-color brochures. You

invested the majority of your tourism promotional money into the new

brochures and you want to make sure everyone has one.

9) You and old Uncle Albert will work the weeklong booth yourselves.

Don't drink water. Eat tradeshow concessionaire fast food exclusively.

Attends late night hospitality suites, drink all the free beer you can and

party with associates every night. Forget your breath mints.

10) Jump into operations when your get back to the office. Wait for all

the calls and new clients from your travel trade show marketing to come

pouring in.

What are ten things every disc golf course should have?

I'm trying to make some improvements to an existing course and am looking for some ideas. I would like to make the tee boxes nicer, etc.

That's a good question!
Personally, I think that there are only a few things that can make or break a disc golf course, but it's all about preference, so here are MY suggestions:

1. Clear and Concise Signage! All too many Disc Golf Courses have nothing but potential, but getting lost along the way can be VERY frustrating. I'm there to play Disc Golf, not to go on a wild goose chase. Signs should be simple yet informative and it wouldn't hurt to have one at the basket that says - NEXT TEE --->!

2. Multiple pin placements. Baskets that are in the same place every time you go out can get a little monotonous. Varying the course, even slightly, keeps it fresh and entices players to keep coming back to see how the course has changed. On the other hand, too many placements, or multiple baskets on the same hole can introduce confusion - not fun.

3. Replace "bad" O.B. with "good" O.B. "Out of bounds" areas should penalize players, NOT empty their disc bags! O.B. in residential areas is bad news! Most Disc Golfers will agree; it SUCKS trying to retrieve discs from surly homeowners who are tired of shagging discs out of their backyards. Nature presents TONS of options for O.B. Water is an excellent choice if done properly. It should present itself without being defining feature and should NEVER come into play on every hole. Risky is OK, dire is NOT.

4. Clearly defined tee areas. Tees don't have to be fancy. You can spend a small fortune on concrete and rubber and they DO require some maintenance. A clearly defined "natural" tee area can make a hole a pleasure or a punishment. In addition, if you don't like where it is, you CAN change it and you won't have to take out a second in order to do so.

5. Maps, Maps, Maps! A good map of your course can be the MOST fundamental aspect of course design. It can serve a multitude of purposes. Advertising, event promotion, enticement, and navigation. Not only can a good map draw players to your course, it conveys a level of professionalism and lets players know that you are serious about your course AND it's design. There's NO better way to get course sponsors that to have a printed map with room for advertising!

Hmmmm... It all seems so simple. I hope my rhetoric helps you to develop your course so that it's everything you (and your fellow players) dreamed it could be!

If you are new to the game of disc golf, your basic concern would be to familiarize yourself with its rules. But if you know the rules of the traditional golf game, familiarizing yourself with the rules of disc golf will be easy. There is nothing complicated about disc golf; you can easily appreciate its concept and objectives even if you have not played the game of golf yourself. Knowing the basic rules of disc golf is enough for you to get started and start playing your initial rounds of disc golf.

As in traditional golf, disc golf makes use of a golf course with eighteen holes and tee boxes. Each hole has a basket specifically designed to catch a disc, and the ultimate objective is to shoot your disc to that basket in the least number of strokes, or throws, possible. Disc golf courses consist mostly of par three holes. And similar to traditional golf, players can score bogies, birdies, or aces. Players have choices of what discs they want to use. They may use only one disc. Or they may use several discs designed specifically for putts, mid-range shots, and drives. You may devise your own technique of throwing different shots in the same manner that other players may devise theirs. Most players find it practical to throw a drive from a dash, and tee boxes have enough space for this.

There are unwritten rules of disc golf. For example, players are expected not to litter the course with trash. Nothing in the golf course may be vandalized or destroyed. Course etiquette, manners and courstesy apply in disc golf courses as they apply in traditional golf. Other rules that apply to disc golf are the following:

• Throw your disc only if you are sure the hole is clear of people or other players.
• The player with the lowest score on the last hole earns the first crack at the first throw for the next hole, but he may also choose to waive it.
• You may allow other groups to play ahead of your group if your pace is slow and you want to maintain your pace.
• The disc position of every shot after the tee shot is right behind the spot where your disc landed. Pick up the disc, take a stance, and throw your disc from this spot.
• Start your round with the hole designated as hole number one and finish the game following the specific order of holes as designated.

Do any of you play disc golf? Where, and what are the courses like near you?

We have a bunch around here. Some on old farms (families trying to keep the land in use ) and many narrowly wooded courses with little open space. I played in florida before and they were much more like a regular golf course. What are they like near you? Any water hazards? Pars?

I only have one.
I play all the time.
My best was... 54 strokes. I'm pretty good... getting near the basket on my first throw. I dont throw backhanded though... i do it another way. Theres one right next to the University of Maryland in college park. its fun.

Disc Golfers

how many disc golfers in the world? How can you qualify the answer? From where do you derive the answer? thx

Currently, there is no way to get an accurate count of the number of disc golfers worldwide. 99% of the disc golf courses are free to use by the public, so there is no function to count how many players come through a day (week, month, year). All of the disc golf manufacturers are privately owned, so no way to find out how many discs are sold yearly.

I ask the question, not to get an answer, because the data is currently unavailable, but to see if you have any ideas of how to get an accurate census.

Hello everyone I am going to tell you about the fundamentals of disc golf. The game of disc golf involves taking your disc (or Frisbee) and attempting to throw it in a basket in 3 throws or under. If you are familiar with regular ball golf and what a par 3 is, than Frisbee golf is exactly like that. Most courses are 9 or 18 holes and they are usually all par 3. There is a tee pad which is typically a concrete slab or flat dirt area for the player to throw their first shot or drive. From there the player progresses to the first shot and throws towards the basket again from behind their disk, this shot is called a mid-range depending on how close you are. At this point hopefully you are putting which means you are about 30 feet or closer and are using putter. Throw he putter in the hole and you just got yourself a par.

If you make your disc in the basket in three shots it is a par and counted as a 0 to your total score the same as in traditional golf. A birdie would be two shots so - 1 and a bogey would be four shots so +1 and the less shots the better. The only difference between disc golf and traditional golf is the disc, everything else is the same.

When it comes to choosing discs start of by picking up a driver and a putter. A driver is very hard plastic for you long distance throws. The putter is usual soft and will fly very straight for short distances. Eventually you will want to incorporate discs for different angles of shots and distances but in the beginning you just need a couple for practice. You will see some serious golfers out there that have bags full with 10 or 20 discs it is crazy.

If you decide take up Frisbee golf there are many course all over the country. I live in Oregon where there are some great courses but if I ever travel I just jump on the web and go to the PDGA website. Just Google disc golf course directory and it will be the firs thing to come up. Than type in your zip and it will show you all the disc golf courses in your area. There will also be a page for the course you want to check out that should give you some information about the course. If it is your first time make sure there are signs so you don't get confused and you might want to try a course that is super long. Putters more than anything are about personal feel. Your best bet would be to go to a local disc golf retailer and just see what feels right. I personally like to throw Wizards by Gateway. Innova Aviars are also a very good choice as most pros throw one type or another.

Disc golf as a sport has been gaining popularity lately. Many cities in the United States in fact provide public disc golf courses where one can play the game for free.

There are unwritten rules of disc golf. For example, players are expected not to litter the course with trash. Nothing in the golf course may be vandalized or destroyed. Course etiquette, manners and courtesy apply in disc golf courses as they apply in traditional golf. Other rules that apply to disc golf are the following:

I'm trying to get into disc golf and need some good discs. Although I'm only a beginner I have alot of Frisbee experience. Most beginner disc sets i found we're expensive $30-50. I've also have had bad experiences with beginner equipment in other sports. I managed to find a site with discs that were fairly inexpensive

You might be better off with two long drivers, one understable, and one stable.

For a putter, the Innova Aviar is fine. I used to use a soft Rhino and it was dependable.

I have an old Discraft Shark that I use for midrange backhands (I drive forehand), it's now Innova Shark, I guess Innova bought it up. It's a sure bet for midrange.

These are good drivers that are easy to turn over:

Innova Leopard
Discraft Cyclone
Innova Cheetah
Innova Valkyrie, if you can find one.

Two of the above would be fine for you but you might also want a stable driver to deal with wind or straight shots. For that, I'd suggest

Innova Eagle, or
Discraft XL

Most of the discs on that site are past models with old plastic, but they'll still work fine. Get bright colors. You could get a 4-disc set for $28 I guess. Either 2 drivers from the 1st list, or one from the 1st and one from the second; a shark, if you really need a midrange; and a soft putter. To save money, just get two drivers and a midrange/putter like the hard Rhino. I've never really seen the point of midrange discs.

Let me explain a bit about stable and understable. When you throw a disc, it's a gyroscope, just like a top. The axis that it spins around will slowly rotate around in the same direction the disc spins, this is called "torque-free precession." If you throw a disc with a slight tilt, the tilt will turn around in a circle too. This is "turnover." An understable disc turns over faster; an overstable disc turns over slower.

To throw a long, hyzer-flip, you need a disc that you can turn over; it takes excellent technique and power to make an overstable disc turn over. Some discs won't turn over no matter what. The Innova Firebird CE for example fades too early to turn over.

Maryland is home to about one dozen disc golf courses, all of varying styles, difficulties, and distances. Some are designed for the seasoned player while others are built for a more casual crowd. For the disc golf novice there are a few highly recommended courses due to their beginner-friendly layouts.

The first recommended beginner course is Calvert Road in College Park, MD. This is a wonderful course to learn on for a number of reasons. For one, Calvert Road Course is built in a small footprint, making it easy to play in about one to two hours for any skill level player. Additionally, it is open enough so that players can really work on their long-distance shots without fear of losing a disc. When playing at Calvert Road Course, disc golfers will learn that the challenge here is executing one perfect drive to get that coveted birdie.

Another great course for beginners is Patapsco Valley State Park in Marriotsville, MD. While some Maryland disc golfers would argue that this course is too long and wooded for beginners, Patapsco does offer amateur and pro tee boxes for each hole. Each hole also has at least two baskets to choose from, allowing the player to pick either the short or long version of each hole. Beginners may wish to choose the shortest distance for greater success. Patapsco Valley State Park will provide disc golf newcomers with a number of challenging holes that offer enough variety to keep them coming back week after week. The course has the ability to fit the need of the player, which makes it a great choice for both beginner and professional level disc golfers.

After mastering these two courses, disc golfers may want to move on to some of Maryland's other great disc golf courses. Druid Hill in Baltimore and Rockburn Branch Park in Elkridge provide some great holes that require a number of challenging shots. These courses also offer weekly tournaments for disc golfers who are looking to take their game to the next level.

Maryland is a great place to both learn and grow in the sport of disc golf. Professionals will find plenty of challenging courses to play that require great technical skill. However, beginners can also find courses that are well-suited for players who are just learning the sport. The best advice for a newcomer? Throw, learn, and play anywhere and anytime.

Spring time is amazing! The buds are bursting off the branches, flowers are peeping up among the dead leaves and everywhere you look are a multitude of different colored greens. Spring is also the time of year we mothers often go into an over vigilance with our children and their allergies. There are many environmental allergies as well as various insect allergies that are prevalent during the warmer months. With this beautiful warm weather and vitality of the earth comes a constant possession of the epipen which is an easy to use method of administering life-saving epinephrine.

I first found out my child was allergic to bees, when at the age of three she found a crispy dead one and almost died of an allergic reaction. It took about eight minutes for her face to puff, a white ring to form around her mouth and for her to need oxygen and epinephrine shots. Unfortunately, I was unprepared and not knowing she was allergic to anything made for a stressful six hour emergency room visit that turned into an overnight stay in the intensive care unit. Thankfully, she received the right treatment in time and now I am equipped for any future bee stings by the required transport of her epipen.

At first, I thought we could keep it in the car- so we would always have it with us on our weekend trips. Therefore, in the car would be too hot or too cold much of the time it is needed. A cooler or ice pack can be too cool and anywhere in the direct sun can be too warm. What are the best disc golf courses in Cincinnati, Ohio?

We are taking a road trip from Milwaukee, WI to Cincinnati, OH. My boyfriend and I love disc golfing and would really like to check out the disc golf courses in Cincinnati. Can anyone recommend a good course?

The best course is at Miami Whitewater Park. It is on the West side of town in Harrison. You will have to buy a park pass to get in and play, but you can buy a daily pass for only $1.
