There are differences between disc golf discs you should understand if you are planning to make an impact in the sport. Simply grabbing a frisbee disc and throwing it may be fun for awhile but you won't make much impression on your rivals.

A disc golf set is like your golf club set in traditional golf. Clubs for driving, approach shots, chipping and putting. In disc golf, it's no different except the tool you're using to make the shot is different.

Let's narrow the shot selection down to four. In disc golf you would need a:

- Distance driver

- Fairway driver

- Mid-range

- Putt & approach

Let's take a look at each one individually. Each of the discs mentioned above have a role to play and when you use them as a team on each hole you play and really practice using them individually you will take your game to another level and start to tear up disc golf courses.

Disc Golf Discs Set

#1. Distance drivers are like your driving woods. They are designed to extract maximum distance from your "tee-off" efforts. Just remember to gain the most distance quite often it has nothing to do with the strength of the throw but more to do with technique.

#2. Fairway drivers are often misunderstood by traditional golfers and in a sense, they are also under utilized by disc golfers. Fairway drivers are great tools when you want to get some accuracy going in your game and not only that, they will get you distance as well. If you aren't using your fairway driver disc enough then go and practice with it...it will add a new dimension to your game.

#3. Mid range discs are like your irons. They can cover a variety of distances from long to medium approach shots and are probably the most used disc in your disc bag.

#4. The putt and approach disc is like the final relay runner and it's the one that takes you home. Just like each of the above, the putt and approach is a skill all on it's own and needs to be practiced just as much as the longer hitting discs.

There are two other discs we haven't mentioned but this article is for serious players who are serious about improving their game. Specialty discs are more old school and will often be used in unique situations while recreational discs are just that - for having fun but don't underestimate their effectiveness to sharpen up your skills even when you are in fun mode.

Disc golf is a sport that has been growing in popularity ever since the invention of the sport in the late 1960's. The sport has grown to over 3,000 courses in the US and another 3,000 globally. This underground sport that many people have never heard of is a fun game that many people are starting to play.

Disc golf is a game that is played very similarly to regular golf, however, instead of using a ball you use discs. The objective is the same as regular golf in the fact that you tee off from a tee-pad and shoot for a hole. However, instead of using a hole like in regular golf the hole is a basket. The basket consists of hanging chains with a basket at the bottom. Your goal is to hit the chains and have the disc land in the basket. As in ball golf you keep track of your scores and are trying to record the lowest score possible.

Just like ball golf you have different clubs or discs for different situations. The three most frequent discs you throw are you driver, mid-range which is like a 7-iron in ball golf and your putter. Each disc, just as in golf, is easier to control and more accurate with the putter being the easiest disc golf use.

The greatest thing about disc golf is that most courses are free to play. You simply have to bring your own discs. This makes it a very affordable and fun game for the average individual while ball golf is much more restrictive with their high green fees. Some courses are placed on personal property and these courses usually charge a nominal fee which is much less than any ball golf course.

If you're just starting out with disc golf it is recommended that you simply buy a mid-range disc. These discs are much easier to throw and control than the drivers. Furthermore, mid-range discs are much easier to work your technique than a driver. This is due to the stability and rim-size of the disc. A few suggestions of discs to consider are the Millennium Element, Innova Roc or Innova Shark. These are a very good beginners disc and can be used for drives and puts the same.

In ball golf the professional association that is associated is the PGA in disc golf the association is the PDGA. The PDGA oversees the sport in the US and governs the community. In fact, they help coordinate the world disc golf championship and the US disc golf championship. Both of these events are premier events similar to a "Masters" tournament in ball golf. If you are wondering who the Tiger Woods of the sport is then look no further than David Feldberg. The Jack Nicklaus of the sport would be Ken Climo. Both players are considered at the top of the sport and have made many DVD's teaching the game.

It was December, 2005 and I was coaching the first game of our high school basketball season at North Kitsap High School (WA). It was late second quarter and we were playing North Mason at home. A North Mason player was heading on a two-on-one fast-break and my point guard Katie was in great position to take a charge. As the offensive player made her move to the basket, Katie stood her ground, feet planted, in perfect position.

BAM!

The collision came and the referee signaled offensive foul. Everyone on our bench and in the stands jumped up and cheered...except for Katie. She lay motionless on the floor.

When I went out to see her it was apparent she had suffered a concussion. Her head hit the floor hard after the impact with the other player. This was her second concussion in a couple of years. Needless to say Katie didn't finish the game and missed two more before she was cleared to play again.

It's not only football coaches that should be worried about head injuries. Concussions are common in most sports, especially basketball, soccer, wrestling, and baseball/fast pitch. Any opportunity for contact with either another player or equipment lends itself to this peril. In fact last winter, the UCLA basketball program was in the news as two of their players were out a significant time due to concussions.

Concussions and other head injuries are tough to prevent. They are part of the game. That being said, as a coach, you can plan for them and how you respond. As you head into a new year, now is the time for you as coaches to start preparing your game plan when it comes to head injuries. What do I mean by that?

o Regardless of your sport, make time in your pre-season meeting with players and parents to discuss the inherent dangers of your sport. You need to lead off with a discussion about head injuries. Document your presentation, both with the players and parents. If you can, use video to record the meeting. As I used to tell my players, the video never lies. If you are ever accused of not warning properly, you now have proof. Sorry...it's the world we live in.

o Don't take chances. It's easy to say now that you won't put an athlete back in a game after a head injury. It's harder when the game is on the line, the emotions are high, and he/she looks fit to participate. Make a decision now that part of your game plan is to resist that urge and just say no. At North Kitsap, we were fortunate to have a training staff that had to clear an athlete to play. Most high schools don't have that luxury. And, if you think this doesn't happen, think again. The newspapers are filled with stories of kids who received serious injuries after going back in following a head injury. Just say no.

o Resist the urge to play them too soon after a concussion. Look, I was one of you. Good sense sometimes flies out the window in the middle of a season. The player wants to play; the parent wants them to play; YOU want them to play. The bottom line is that nothing is as important as your athlete's health...period. Once a player has suffered a concussion, it is easier to get another one. Troy Aikman and Steve Young are perfect examples. Wait to get medical clearance from a doctor before letting them back into play.

There are two important factors you face with this issue. The first is the long-term health of your player. You have a great responsibility as their coach to protect them from undue harm. Take that responsibility seriously. The second is to protect you. You have liability for their care. If you don't use best practices, you may find your name on the front page of the paper instead of the sports page...for all the wrong reasons. If you do everything a prudent and educated coach should do when it comes to head injuries, you will be also protecting your reputation and career.

A Sports party theme for a birthday party or special event or holiday can include sports like football, baseball, tennis, soccer, the possibilities are endless! Here are some general fun party games to play at a sports themed party.

Your little athlete or cheerleader will love to play this game at a sports-themed party. The leader of the cheer will think of the name of a sport, sports equipment, famous athlete, etc. They will shout the first letter to the other players in this style: "Gimme an A!" The other players will shout "A!" The leader will continue to spell the word in this way. The first player to correctly guess what is being spelled will become the leader.

Naturally another sports party game will involve one or more actual sports. Instead of playing full games of football, baseball, basketball, and soccer, try this obstacle course that incorporates all of his or her favorite sports. You will need balls of different types, plastic orange cones or other boundary markers, a basket or hoop, and a stopwatch. Divide the partygoers into two teams. The first person on the team will take a basketball and dribble to the first cone. They will stand at the cone and try to "shoot" the ball into the basket or hoop (placed a few feet away.) Next, they will pick up the soccer ball and use their feet to guide it around the next cone. At that cone, they will need to grab the football and throw it to the next person in line. Stop the stopwatch. Reset the course and continue the stopwatch. When both teams have finished, the course, the team with the lowest time wins!
