Have you ever passed a group of guys running around in the woods throwing Frisbees and wondered what the hell are these people doing? Well believe it or not they are playing a new and upcoming sport, Disk Golf. When I first learned of Disk golf I thought what is so fun about trampling threw the woods and playing with a Frisbee? Then I went for the first time and I have been an avid player for the past 7 years.

A friend of mine talked me into playing and I found that it was a tremendous workout, fun and best of all it was free! I went to a local sporting goods store spent $15 on a driver and a putter (different disks are designed for distances). The minute I entered the coarse the woods reeked of patchouli and I saw the hippies running ramped throwing Frisbees. The rules were simple just like regular golf. Most coerces all holes are par 3's, which means for you non-golfers that if you make it on the first throw it's an eagle (-2), second shot a birdie (-1), on the third shot it's a par (even), 4th shot is a bogey (+1), double bogey (+2), etc. There are 18 holes and each hole has a basket that you attempt to make your disk into. Keep track of your score after every hole. For example, if I shot a +1, even, +2, and a -1 on the first 4 holes than my score going into the 5th hole is a +2, which would be 2 over par.

The terrain depends on where you play because every coarse is different, but no matter the coarse you will get a great workout while having a blast. You're walking on flat terrain, rocky areas, up hills and down hills it's so much walking and tossing of the disk that you can burn 500 calories by the time you finish 18 holes! Another great part about this sport is that unlike football or basketball Disk Golf does not involve any running or physical contact, it's a sport for hippies and aging people like myself.

One last tip; don't get discouraged the first few times if you don't shoot so well just think about the 500 calories your burning and that almost every muscle in your body is being exercised while having fun, for free.
